In order to qualify for the 2014 Best Online Programs for Veterans rankings, programs must first be ranked in U.S. News' broader 2014 Best Online Programs.  This ensures they meet a range of essential benchmarks, including regional accreditation, investment in academic and career services, and acceptable performance among their peers on standard measurements.

Additionally, they must meet certain criteria that specifically concern veterans' education benefits:

  • Programs must belong to an institution that is certified for the GI Bill, and participates in the Yellow Ribbon Program or charges in-state tuition to veterans who apply from out of state
  • Programs have to provide a credit-granting course in the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES) catalog, as DANTES courses adhere to federal quality guidelines and participating schools can allow some military service to apply toward a degree
  • Programs must belong to an institution that is a member of the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOC) Consortium, which allows credits earned at one member school to be easily transferred to another

"Given the increasing number of U.S. servicemen and servicewomen returning from deployment and looking to enter college, we feel that the Best Online Programs for Veterans rankings are more important than ever," said Matt Speer, director of sales and marketing for U.S. News University Connection.  "Finding accredited online programs dedicated to helping them make the most of their education benefits can be difficult, so we're thrilled we can provide some professional guidance."
