Obama Appealing to Low-Income Renters

Low-Income Apartment Renters Overwhelmingly Choosing Barack Obama

SALISBURY, Md., Oct. 31. 2008 — In an online survey conducted by ApartmentSmart.com, Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama has an overwhelming lead over candidate John McCain among low-income renters.

Seventy-two percent (72%) of low-income renters plan to vote for Barack Obama while eighteen percent (18%) intend to vote for John McCain. This group, who many would say the American Dream has left behind, is clearly responding to Obama's message of change.

Obama also leads among homeowners, though by a much smaller margin. Fifty-two percent (52%) of all homeowners surveyed intend to vote for Obama where thirty-seven percent (37%) intend to vote for McCain.

Another significant finding was that among Hispanic voters, nearly sixty-five percent (65%) intended to vote for Barack Obama to John McCain's sixteen percent (16%).

The results are significant as low- and middle-income groups have been targeted in recent registration drives and get-out-the-vote campaigns. With a nearly four-to-one lead among low-income renters and Hispanics, those initiatives may prove a dramatic difference come Election Day.

The survey was conducted during the month of October and polled more than 360 potential voters. The survey has a margin of error of six percent (6%).
