One Stop Searching Becomes One Step Shorter

Deep Web Technologies Deploys New Alert Service For Science.gov That Allows Users to Keep Up With the Latest Federal Science Information

LOS ALAMOS, N.M., March 23, 2005 — Science.gov now offers a free and easy-to-use "Alert" service, created by Deep Web Technologies (DWT), that sends alerts to patrons' email each week based on their area of interest in science. This new service was launched at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Washington, D.C.

Science.gov, a collaboration of the U.S. Department of Energy and 11 other federal agencies, eases the process of accessing hard-to-find federal science information by offering the public a "one stop" search page that dives into 47 million pages of government R&D results, more than 1,700 government information resources and 30 databases on a wide variety of scientific topics. Science.gov's search capabilities are powered by Deep Web Technologies' Distributed Explorit(TM) technology.

At the launch of Science.gov 2.0, Dr. Raymond Orbach, Director of the DOE Office of Science, emphasized the need for improved information-sharing tools, noting that, "In these extraordinary times for science, the tools by which we share science information must also be extraordinary. Science progresses only if knowledge is shared, and Science.gov 2.0 shares knowledge with the public in a way not shared before – by helping the public find information most relevant to their needs."

"Science.gov Alerts further facilitate the sharing of knowledge envisioned by Dr. Orbach," noted Abe Lederman, Founder and CTO of DWT.

From the Science.gov homepage (http://www.science.gov), individuals can set up a personalized Alerts account to make the search process one step shorter by allowing Science.gov to do the searching for them. Users can specify the subject area as well as specific sources for Science.gov to monitor for them. Each week up to 25 relevant results from each of the databases the user selects will be delivered to the user's email account. Users can also visit their online personalized Alert Archive to view six weeks of stored alerts results and edit their Alert profiles.

About Deep Web Technologies

Deep Web Technologies (DWT), based in Los Alamos, NM, is a leading developer of software that mines, aggregates and ranks content from difficult-to-access regions of the web, known as the deep web, containing the best scientific and technical content. Founder Abe Lederman developed one of the first web-based search and retrieval applications, Explorit(TM). Using this technology DWT continually assists government and commercial organizations to capitalize on the advantages of information-sharing in a heavily networked and web-enabled culture. In addition to Science.gov, DWT's technology powers major sites such as DOE's Science and Technology Virtual Library ), the DoD community's STINET MultiSearch Application (http://multisearch.dtic.mil), and the Viral Hepatitis Deep Search Portal ).
