Popular Six-Trait Writing Seminar to Help Guide Educators Through Common Core Writing Shifts

PETERBOROUGH, N.H., Feb. 7, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Preparing students to become college and career-ready writers has never been more challenging for teachers. With the new demands of the text types of writing required by the Common Core, educators are likely feeling a bit overwhelmed trying to ensure that their students meet — and exceed — the new performance expectations.

Staff Development for Educators (SDE) is hoping to alleviate some of the hardships educators are facing by helping them discover fresh ways to teach to the new standards of the Common Core and dramatically increase students' writing performance. This spring, SDE will offer a powerful, Six-Trait Writing for Common Core Success seminar in several locations.

Lead by SDE expert presenter Betty Hollas, a veteran educator with more than 25 years of service as a teacher and principal, as well as a distinguished author on teaching writing, Six-Trait Writing for Common Core Success trains teachers how to create classrooms of willing, enthusiastic, and successful writers ready to meet the new rigor and requirements of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).

"In this seminar, educators will receive classroom-proven tools that will not only get students excited about writing, but also boost their proficiency," Hollas said. "Teachers will also receive rubrics that align to each of the text types required by the Common Core State Standards to help students learn to assess, revise, and edit their own writing."

Hollas will deliver a plain-language overview of the text types required by the Common Core: opinion/argument, informative/explanatory, and narrative. She then will lead teachers through how to use the popular Six-Trait Writing framework to ensure success with those text types, as well as offer techniques for guiding students through thorough self-evaluation of their writing.

In addition, Hollas will provide advice on how to structure more time for writing in the classroom, integrate it into teachers' existing curriculum, and give it the attention it deserves. She'll also guide teachers through identifying the traits of good writing, relating it to the CCSS, and modeling it in the classroom. Educators will return to the classroom armed with a toolkit of strategies that are immediately implementable.

The seminar is designed for new and veteran teachers alike, and provides powerful solutions to the most challenging issues they face with student writing.

"Whether educators are new to the Six Traits or are already familiar with them, they'll learn fresh strategies and approaches that can be easily implemented to create a classroom full of confident and skilled writers," explained Hollas.
