R&D/Leverage Debuts Laser Processing Capability at Pack Expo

A cost- and time-efficient, repeatable process for creating texture, structure and surface treatments — and optimizes sustainability…

CHICAGO, Oct. 18, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — R&D/Leverage's new Laser Processing capability represents the company's latest addition to its "idea to mold" holistic approach to package creation that builds brands and delights consumers.

The R&D/Leverage Laser Processing capability and many other innovations around structural brand development and mold manufacturing can be explored here at Pack Expo International 2012 October 28-31, booth E6605.

According to Adam Nelson, the company's Laser Business Manager, consumer packaged goods makers can now benefit from custom, machine-based textures, structures and surface treatments that go far beyond milling and that have an added, eco-friendly appeal.

"Our Laser Processing is a truly repeatable process that delivers visual and tactile qualities and grabs consumers at the point of sale," Nelson said.  "Our experience tells us that the tactile aspect of a package is as important as the visual cues – the package has to look and feel good in the consumer's hand."   In fact, the R&D/Leverage approach incorporates "tactile tactics" that interpret consumer preferences and dislikes regarding "feel" and builds these preferences into the creation of a custom texture, he explained.

"Without using chemicals or complex, time-consuming mechanical processes, we can now customize organic and non-organic textures to perfectly match the brand requirements of a product," Nelson said.  "Our micro-machining laser defined texture can machine metal to 0.0005 of an inch – 8 times smaller than the human hair – and do it as much as five times faster and six times as efficiently."

Examples of organic textures include custom-designed rain drops, wood grain, leather-look, pebble patterns, even finger prints.  Non-organic textures might include geometric shapes, herringbone patterns, plaids and more.

"We can literally create a texture from an image of an organic and, with our processing know-how, generate – for example – a maple leaf design, with veins, for a syrup package," Nelson said.

Jason Husk, R&D/Leverage's Director of Business Development, added that the company's new Laser Processing capability was a boon for the consumer packaged goods market, as well as for makers of implantable medical devices and for precision micro components, where the benefit of the laser's precision far outpaces traditional milling.

"Imagine a laundry or shaving  product with a unique grip on the handle that really engages the consumer, or a surgical instrument that will not slip or slide out of the surgeon's wet glove," Husk said.  "Here is another tool in our toolkit to help companies create packaging – without two or three-shot processes – that enhances purchase intent and delivers superior return-on-investment – because there is a high correlation between what the consumer feels and what the consumer buys.

"These are not one-size-fits-all, out-of-a-book solutions," he said. "Here is a process that delivers cost- and time-efficient custom designs, wins over consumers and builds brands, in a wide range of product categories.  With the flood of new product launches and the need for differentiation that speaks to consumers, ours is an exciting new part of our holistic approach.  Other suppliers may have Laser Processing equipment, but not our experience and industry-specific historical knowledge, which is our 'special sauce' that delivers value-added."
