'Referee, Staying Up To Snuff' by Chuck Wenstrom: The 'Official' Storybook on Blowing the Whistle for Twenty-five Years

CORVALLIS, Ore., July 9, 2010 — Referee, Staying Up To Snuff by Chuck Wenstrom

"Kill the umpire!" may sound like some ridiculous fan's ranting during the heat of athletic competition, but if you are on the receiving end of this verbal threat, your blood might boil while your personal defense shield kicks into autopilot. Sports officials are after all human with feelings, vulnerabilities, and above all, a professional commitment to being fair as well as objective. Referee, Staying Up To Snuff is a first-hand look into a career official's playbook of experiences and testaments.

Author Wenstrom believes that a coach's main charge is to teach the game and its techniques, the rules, and sportsmanship, while officials are responsible for making sure this regimen is carried out. Referee, Staying Up To Snuff (published by iUniverse) brings to life the delicate balance that exists in this paradigm through anecdotes and personal reflections contained within his dead-on diaries showcasing one amateur sports official's life-long commitment to maintaining a level playing field. From the vehement sideline rule evaluator a.k.a. "referee wannabe" to overzealous coaches and parent/fan to striped-shirted game officials of all colors and backgrounds who strive for fairness, these stories put to the test the true meaning of any athletic competition — do your best, never give up, and accept defeat with dignity or wear the badge of victory with humility!

About the Author

Ask Montana native Chuck Wenstrom what he liked about growing up in Helena — the heart of "Gold Country" — and he'll give you a straight answer: "Everything!" Wenstrom traces his blood connection to these Rocky Mountain foothills via his ancestor's westward push and eventual "Big Sky" settlement during the early 1800s. It's that same pioneering spirit that ran deep in Wenstrom's veins during his academic years at St. Helena parochial and public schools and later at Oregon State College. After earning a B.S. and M.A. in Education, he kicked off his career as a high school teacher. Running a close second to his passion for teaching was his fanaticism for sports. If there was a competitive game being played — wrestling, basketball, football, track, baseball, or softball — Wenstrom found that he became actively involved coaching or officiating. Twenty-five years later he took to the sidelines to spend more time with is wife of 60 years, Joanne, and their triplet grandchildren. Referee, Staying Up To Snuff is his first book.
