Saddlebags Beware: How La Jolla Cosmetic Surgery Centre Is Helping More Patients Target Undesirable Fat Without Surgery

Lauren Amico, PA-C announces the arrival of CoolSculpting's new Coolsmooth handpiece for non-surgical fat reduction of the outer thighs

SAN DIEGO, June 18, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Even the smallest amount of excess diet- and exercise-resistant fat can be bothersome, but getting rid of it no longer requires a trip to the operating room, says board certified physician assistant and aesthetic specialist Lauren Amico, PA-C. The new Coolsmooth handpiece now makes it possible to target smaller areas of fat with the popular non-invasive CoolSculpting procedure.

La Jolla Cosmetic Surgery Centre (LJCSC ) is among the first in San Diego to offer CoolSculpting with the Coolsmooth handpiece.

"With two types of CoolSculpting applicators, we're able to offer a broad range of patients a non-surgical option to permanently reduce unwanted fat," says Amico, Director of the Laser & Skincare Clinic at LJCSC. "This is excellent news for patients who have been previously told that liposuction surgery was their only treatment option."

CoolSculpting uses a technology called "cryolipolysis" to deeply chill fat cells in the treated area until they break down, without damaging surrounding tissues. Amico and her staff perform CoolSculpting treatments during an office visit, and there is no downtime required after a patient leaves the clinic. The body gradually eliminates the targeted fat cells over 2 to 3 months following treatment.

CoolSculpting's first focus was the abdomen and hips

Until recently, Amico primarily used CoolSculpting to help patients reduce fat on the abdomen and flanks. CoolSculpting has been FDA cleared for these areas since 2012, and the original applicator was designed with these areas in mind. It uses a vacuum-like device that pulls the tissue in the treatment area up into the applicator, where a two-sided cooling panel surrounds the bulge and delivers the cooling technology.

Coolsmooth enables CoolSculpting treatment for smaller areas of the body

With the introduction of the Coolsmooth handpiece, CoolSculpting is now FDA cleared to treat the thighs as well. The handpiece contains a flat, single-sided cooling panel that is placed directly against the targeted area, making it possible to address fat deposits that are too small to be treated with the vacuum-style applicator. The CoolSculpting treatment then proceeds using the same cryolipolysis technology.

Amico likens the technique to using a cool iron: "Instead of pulling the fatty bulge up, the Coolsmooth is pressed against a patient's skin. We can adjust the Coolsmooth panel to fit an individual's unique contours, which allows us to more easily treat the outer thighs, a common problem area for many of our patients, especially women."

While the Coolsmooth is indicated for the outer thighs, Amico says the device can also be used effectively on other areas of the body. The Coolsmooth can also be used to treat the abdomen and flanks for very lean patients who are not ideal candidates for the vacuum-style CoolSculpting applicator.

"We're excited to have the Coolsmooth at LJCSC, because now we can say 'yes' to more patients who desire a non-surgical alternative to liposuction," concludes Amico. She reminds any patient considering a fat reduction procedure to consult first with a board certified plastic surgeon, who can recommend the options best suited to a patient's needs.
