Faber, a native of St. Cloud, Minnesota, graduated from Dartmouth College in 1982. He worked in the commercial real estate industry for the likes of Trammell Crow and Heitman Properties where he handled leasing for some of the Twin Cities' most notable properties. In 1995, he acquired KM Building Company, a commercial construction company, which he owned until 2012 while operating a commercial brokerage and advisory firm.
