The Pete Delohery Award for Best Sports Book honors the author of Lamb to the Slaughter, a popular novel that explored the world of boxing. Mr. Delohery, who died in 2011, was a civil engineer by training, but built a following for his writing after his novel's publication in 2011. The novel has been translated into Spanish and is available via Amazon and Barnes & Noble. He also authored the short story The Deadly Smile.

The Pete Delohery Award for Best Sports Book is open to fiction and non-fiction works from self or independent publishers, producing five or fewer titles per year. Print or e- titles with any publication date are eligible for entry. There is no limit to the number of books an individual can enter; each book is a separate entry with a fee of $40. Entry deadline is midnight on October 1, with winners notified by November 2.

The Pete Delohery Award for Best Sports Book is part of the larger Shelf Unbound Writing Competition for Best Independently Published Book, which is sponsored by Bowker and Blurb. Official rules and submission details for the entire program can be found at Shelf Media Group's contest rules page.
