Spectra Watermakers Introduces the New SP-20 Pearson Pump With Energy Recovery Technology

The Spectra Pearson Pump Is a Breakthrough Invention for Energy Efficient Reverse Osmosis Desalination

SAN RAFAEL, Calif., Jan. 28, 2011 — Spectra Watermakers Inc., a leading manufacturer of reverse osmosis desalination systems and energy recovery pumps, is proud to present their latest product development, the SP-20 Pearson Pump.

Spectra Watermakers' new 20 gpm version of the Pearson Pump is an elegant new high-pressure pump innovation that has been developed for energy efficient Reverse Osmosis desalination of seawater and brackish water. The Pearson Pump is an evolution and enhancement of reciprocating pump design. This unique pump system combines feed water pumping and energy recovery into a single unit, recapturing up to 80% of the energy wasted in a conventional system.

This evolutionary design dramatically increases the efficiency of a desalination system, bringing energy requirements down to an impressive 8 Watt Hours per Gallon (2.1 kW per 1000L), a major improvement for seawater desalination.

The SP-20 Pearson Pump is based on the proven SP-5 Pearson Pump that has been used in the field for over two years in places like Afghanistan, Dubai, Australia, Venezuela, Iraq, the South Pacific and Chile. After 2 years of extensive lab testing the SP-20 will be in field-testing applications by early 2011.

Spectra Watermakers has been a long-time leader in energy recovery systems for the marine industry small-scale reverse osmosis desalination. After developing the revolutionary Clark Pump in the 1990s Spectra has continued to improve, design and manufacture some of the world's most energy efficient desalination equipment. The energy efficiency allows Spectra to build superior quality equipment using Solar and Wind power to drive many of their products, like the "Solar Cube," which currently produces up to 3,000 gallons per day with the SP-5 Pearson Pump. The development of the new SP-20 Spectra Pearson Pump will enable Spectra to increase the output of desalinated water by 30% in many of their existing products, while also reducing their energy requirements.

"With water-borne diseases topping the headlines in global newspapers, never before has it been more important to quickly, efficiently, and safely solve the world's crisis," said Bill Edinger, President of Spectra Watermakers Inc., in a recent report. "The production of the Pearson Pump is another important step toward affordable, dependable, and environmentally sound water purification."

The message is clear; the water supply in some of the most densely populated regions of the world is under great stress, not only from contamination and salt water intrusion, but also from the breakdown of an aging water distribution infrastructure. This looming crisis and the associated issues are vast and complex, but part of the solution could lie within a decentralized non-municipal distributed water system of smaller plants. Building a distributed infrastructure is less capital intensive, and can be constructed on an incremental basis. This model is more easily powered today by renewable energy sources, reducing the cost of energy transmission and its associated infrastructure while simultaneously reducing its carbon footprint. Projects such as these are being built in developing countries and remote areas that do not have an existing infrastructure and lack access to a clean water supply. This localized concept, however, has advantages that apply anywhere.

Spectra Watermakers manufactures a full product line that includes solar and wind-powered Land Based desalination units, which are now being used for military, disaster relief, village level water supply, small eco-resort, and remote home applications. The introduction of their new SP-20 Pearson Pump adds even more water production for less energy as part of the solution.
