Teachers Support Germ-Killing Invention Coughy Cup™ and Cups4Kids™ Fundraiser to Eradicate Missed School Days Resulting from Sickness

The inventor of a germ killing cough cup is turning to the internet to raise funds to begin manufacturing his cups for kids so they can stay healthy and not miss school.

SUGAR LAND, Texas, April 29, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — It's called a Coughy Cup™.  John Delatorre, founder of Coughy Cup, Inc. says the Coughy Cup™ is a new approach to managing the spread of germs and viruses from coughing. Change the lid and it can also be used for sneezing. Some cups also dispense tissue.

"The Coughy Cup™ filters more than 99% of bacteria without chemicals. Soon after, we'll launch cups that dispense tissue and filters that kill 99.9% of cold and flu viruses in 15 minutes or less. Our ultimate goal is to see a reusable Coughy Cup™ in every child's school book bag. One filter, per person per day can help keep kids healthy," says Delatorre.

The Coughy Cup™ consists of a cup, a lid and a filter. To use the device, a person coughs into the lid and filtered air exits the bottomless cup. A lid with a smaller opening is available for children ages 3 to 8.

  • The common cold causes children to miss 22 million school days each year.
  • Influenza causes children to miss 38 million school days each year.

The fundraiser centers around a campaign called Cups4Kids™. Money raised will be used to manufacture the first ten thousand cups. It's also a chance for the public to donate cups to any school of their choice, buy Coughy Cup™ t-shirts or even have dinner with the inventor.

"We're offering rewards to thank our fans for their help. I'll even shave my head and come clean your house if that's what it takes. I'm happy to say parents are our greatest supporters," says Delatorre.

The Cups4Kids™ fundraiser launched on Indiegogo.com on April 23, 2014 and ends June 22, 2014.  The goal is to raise $50,000 to purchase the tooling and materials needed to begin sending cups to schools. Seventy-five hundred dollars is needed to pay the Food and Drug Administration for classification and registration.

"The FDA considers the Coughy Cup to be a medical device because it mitigates germs & viruses. The Coughy Cup is a simple solution to a complex problem," says Delatorre.

The Cups4Kids™ campaign goes beyond schools. Delatorre says he's already getting calls from infection control nurses wanting the cups for their emergency room waiting areas and doctor's offices.

"Schools represent a major line of defense but consider how people share germs and viruses in confined areas like hospitals, airplanes, nursing homes and daycare centers. Most importantly we want to help keep kids healthy so they don't miss school nor bring home their germs to parents who miss work," say Delatorre.
