'The Bizarre Adventures of an Environmental Sherlock Holmes': Occupational Health and Safety Professional Shares Entertaining Stories About Line of Work

BEL AIR, Md., June 30, 2010 — Mothball-induced dizziness. An odd-shaped placebo. A strange use for vinegar. A paper clip. All of these things have one thing in common: Charles Scott. In his quirky, entertaining new book, Problems…Solved: The Bizarre Adventures of an Environmental Sherlock Holmes (published by iUniverse), Scott, an occupational health and safety professional, offers readers a series of 67 vignettes depicting the various oddities encountered in his line of work.

Unique and often humorous, Problems…Solved takes inspiration from James Herriot's beloved short stories, offering a selection of episodes in the life of Scott that can be read aloud and enjoyed by all. All of the incidents are true, but some names have been changed to protect identity.

Scott's work often required him to be innovative and think on his feet. Chapter eight, "The Noise Problem," centers around the noise violations at a brick manufacturing plant — Scott was hired to do a survey and discovered that the kiln operators were being exposed to noises that were much higher than regulations allowed. When he discovered that five of the employees happened to be deaf, realizing that five kiln operators were needed, he was able to move the workers around and the deaf employees replaced the former kiln operators. This move saved the owner of the plant a lot of time, hassle and money over the years.

Candid and true-to-life, Problems…Solved also shares Scott's personal journey as he relates the uncertainty he felt about which career path to take, finally entering the field of occupational health and safety in his mid-30s.

"Helping companies control situations that might lead to worker's compensation claims, keep premiums as low as possible, and avoid penalties which could be assessed by government inspectors has led me into situations I could have never made up or imagined," Scott writes. Embark on a series of adventures with him in the delightful pages of Problems…Solved.
