Tween Publishing Releases Study Skills Curriculum for Middle School Students

The comprehensive program provides 28 classroom-ready lesson plans for high school and college readiness

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., Nov. 13, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Tween Publishing is pleased to announce the release of a comprehensive study skills curriculum based on The Middle School Student's Guide to Study Skills. The curriculum was developed and written by Susan Mulcaire, a teacher and attorney who specializes in creating innovative enrichment curriculum for grades six to eight.

This extensive program enables teachers to educate middle school students on all aspects of study skills. Skills covered include the process of learning, traits of the metacognitive learner, pre-learning strategies, Cornell and Matrix notes, active reading and listening, how to outline a textbook, memory and recall strategies, and test-taking tips for all types of tests. Also addressed are skills specific to college readiness, such as the benefits and challenges of distance learning, information literacy, critical thinking, and goal setting.

"How students learn is just as important as what they learn," says Mulcaire. "This program provides students with the tools and strategies they need for high school and college readiness. It's important that students enter high school with good study habits, and cognizant of their personal learning strengths and weaknesses."

This program completes Tween's three-part college readiness series for grades six through eight, fitting neatly between its popular work habits, time management, and organizational skills program based on The Middle School Student's Guide to Ruling the World! and fun introduction to postsecondary education, The Middle School Student's Guide to College.

College readiness programs are often too expensive to enable a school to offer instruction to all students, or are administered by an outside contractor, which is both an inconvenience for teachers and can inhibit skills from adequately transferring to the classroom. In California, funding for the AVID college readiness program has been cut by Governor Jerry Brown.

"Good academic skills are essential for all students. To be college-ready, every student needs the benefits of formal instruction in good academic skills, not just a select few," says Mulcaire. "This series is a game-changer. Now every middle school can afford to make college readiness a part of their school culture."

Tween's resources are ideal for a college and career readiness exploratory, life skills, advisory, after school, and freshman academy.
