Ryugaku Journal, a Tokyo-based publication aligned with Japan's largest study-abroad program, annually ranks the world's top English language institutes.

The designation is based on a survey of 500 Japanese students who have studied abroad, based on the following criteria: teaching and administrative support; lessons; accommodations; facilities; and environment.

There are known to be thousands of English language learning institutes in the U.S. alone.

UC San Diego's program received two No. 1 rankings in the categories of variety of programs and promised improvement, as well as in environment and city location. It was rated second in the category of teachers and international student services support.

"We are deeply gratified to receive this honor," said Roxanne Nuhaily, director of international studies at UC San Diego's English Language Institute. "Our goal has always been to provide our students with the highest caliber curriculum along with a memorable living experience."

The institute is part of UC San Diego Extension.

An estimated 11 percent of UC San Diego's ELI students are Japanese. Courses are available both in short-term and intensive ELP (English Language Programs), along with professional certificates and the University and Professional Studies (UPS) program for university credit.

The school receiving top honors was Hastings English Language Centre in Great Britain. In addition to UC San Diego, two other U.S. schools were ranked in the top ten: Global Village English Centre in Honolulu, Hawai'i; and Language Pacifica in Menlo Park, CA

In 2013, UC San Diego was ranked No. 10 overall.
