Vanderbilt University Medical Center Chooses MedAptus for Technical Charge Capture and Management Software

Organization Seeks Process Automation Ahead of ICD-10 Transition

BOSTON, Sept. 18, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — MedAptus® today announced that Vanderbilt University Medical Center has selected the company's Technical Charge Capture (Tech) solution to code and bill for hospital-based procedures. Tech will be rolled-out across more than 20 departments as the hospital streamlines outpatient charge creation and operational charge management processes prior to transitioning to ICD-10-CM for diagnosis coding.

Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC), one of the nation's premier academic medical institutions, is a comprehensive healthcare facility dedicated to patient care, research, and biomedical education. With more than 60 locations throughout Tennessee and Kentucky, VUMC's 2,200 clinical provider physicians see more than 1.7 million patients each year.

As with many hospitals, VUMC had been documenting outpatient facility encounters using paper. Fully realizing that the expanded ICD-10 code set would not easily translate to charge tickets and back-office data entry, the hospital engaged MedAptus around its patented Tech software solution. Tech, implemented in a number of similarly large and complex academic medical centers, eases the outpatient procedure documentation process across care teams and also promotes compliance and expedited payment.

In addition to single sign-on access from the proprietary VUMC EMR system, STARPanel, MedAptus Tech will have a number of other interfaces supporting its deployment. An inbound appointment feed from VUMC's Epic Cadence system will populate patient census lists; after charges are captured, those deemed 'clean' by an embedded rules engine will be exported to McKesson Health Quest for billing.

"As the clock ticks closer to October 1, 2014, interest in our technologies continues to accelerate, particularly for outpatient hospitals that have had to struggle with manual charge capture processes given a general lack of solutions for facility charge capture. We are thrilled for the opportunity to work with an institution as renowned as Vanderbilt, to help automate and improve its revenue cycle workflow during a time of great change for the healthcare industry," noted Gene Schneider, MedAptus president and CEO.
