Virginia Firm Wins Award for Superstorm Sandy Relief Work

FORT BELVOIR, Va., Oct. 31, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — On the one-year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy's landfall on the Eastern Seaboard, the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) held an awards ceremony to recognize their top civilian contractors.  Foster Fuels was awarded for their critical organization of emergency fuel during the deadly storm.  The Brookneal, VA, firm mobilized 340 fuel trucks and dispensed over four million gallons of fuel to emergency responders and other critical personnel.

The DLA and its 25,000 employees manage the distribution of supplies for combat and relief efforts around the globe. The DLA relies heavily on civilian contractors to fulfill and expedite their logistical needs.  In a release by the DLA, Vice Admiral Mark Harnitchek said about the Superstorm Sandy relief efforts, "It was a huge challenge for the nation, and I can tell you DLA – and you – answered the call. This was not business as usual; it was all about being as responsive as we possibly could as quickly as we possibly could."

"We knew Sandy was going to be our biggest challenge yet," admitted Watt Foster, Jr., president of Foster Fuels. "But all of the natural disasters to which we've responded had prepared us for this moment and its demands."

This is not the first DLA award for Foster Fuels, who in 2012 (a week prior to Superstorm Sandy), won the prestigious Outstanding Readiness Support Award for Small Business. Having been in recent years the United States' leading emergency fuel supplier to relief and recovery operations, Foster Fuels had gained experience responding on both a government and private level to hurricanes Gustav, Ike, and Katrina – as well as deploying their emergency fueling operation in Haiti to support the US Armed Forces recovery effort there. In 2012 alone, the Brookneal company provided key, around-the-clock fuel supply after Hurricane Isaac and the summer derecho.
