For Women Struggling With Asymmetry, Don't Get Mad—"Get Even"

Las Vegas cosmetic surgeon Dr. Samir Pancholi utilizes surgical techniques to help women achieve better breast symmetry

LAS VEGAS, March 10, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — A desire for larger breasts is not always the primary reason why a woman chooses to have breast augmentation, says Las Vegas cosmetic surgeon Dr. Samir Pancholi. For many patients, cosmetic breast surgery is an excellent solution to help improve breast symmetry.

"Perfect breast symmetry is the rare exception, not the rule," says Dr. Pancholi, who specializes in breast augmentation and revision. "It is far more common for the breasts to have some degree of difference in shape, size and position." For many women, the difference in size or shape is so small it is difficult to tell. For others the difference is significant and noticeable. Women don't need to live with it though: obvious breast asymmetry can be improved with a skilled surgical approach.

Breast augmentation surgery can be tailored to address the cause of asymmetry and create a more aesthetically pleasing breast contour. Dr. Pancholi outlines some of the common issues that breast asymmetry correction can help to improve:

Uneven breast development. For some women, each breast develops differently, resulting in asymmetrical size or shape. By placing a uniquely sized implant into each breast, a skilled surgeon can help to improve symmetry. For patients who would also like to increase their overall breast size, this procedure can achieve both aims. In some cases, a breast lift or reduction may be required to create a better match between the breasts.

Variances in the rib cage or chest wall. A chest wall that naturally bows out can cause the breasts to project to the sides, with nipples pointing outward. Conversely, if the chest wall is slightly concave, the breasts can appear to sit too close together. A cosmetic surgeon can help balance out these anatomical issues with the right implants and surgical approach to achieve a more symmetrical breast augmentation result.

Changes in breast shape following pregnancy. A loss of breast volume after pregnancy can result in sagging, or ptosis, in the breasts. It is rare for sagging to affect each breast evenly, and women may thus experience asymmetry in breast shape and nipple position. For these patients, a breast lift with augmentation can help improve breast symmetry, shape and volume.

Nipple and areola differences. Incorporating breast lift techniques with skillful implant placement can help create a more parallel nipple position or improve the size and shape of the nipple/areolar complex. A surgeon can also remove excess skin to reduce the size of one or both areolas.

Improving symmetry of existing breast implants. Occasionally, a patient may experience asymmetry due to poorly placed implants. "If a surgeon does not account for any natural variation in breast shape or position, he or she could exacerbate any existing asymmetry," says Dr. Pancholi. By adjusting the position of the breast pocket, or space for the implant beneath the breast, a cosmetic surgeon can achieve a more natural, aesthetically pleasing result.

While no procedure can create perfect symmetry, a skillful, customized approach to breast augmentation can significantly improve symmetry. Dr. Pancholi recommends that any woman bothered by breast asymmetry consult an experienced cosmetic surgeon, who can help determine the best treatment option.
