World Swimming Instructors Conference in Sarasota, FL October 7-9, 2009: The 21st Century Swimming Instructor

SARASOTA, Fla., April 10, 2009 — Miracle Swimming Institute (MSI) of Sarasota, FL will hold a conference for swim instructors worldwide to learn the 5 Circles Teaching Method(TM), a paradigm shift in teaching that replaces America's 1914 method of teaching swimming mechanics with the 2009 method of teaching comfort and control in water. Based on the idea that people can't learn to swim if they're not in control in water, MSI has found that when afraid adults overcome their fear and learn control in water, basic swimming skills spontaneously emerge. If they are taught swim skills while still afraid, they panic and are unable to stay safe in deep water. Most people in their first swimming lessons – adults and children – are a bit afraid and therefore not comfortably in control. In the U.S. alone, 46% of adults are afraid in deep water in pools; 64% are afraid in open water. Seventy percent of drownings in the U.S. are by adults. The 5 Circles Teaching Method is seen by its licensed instructors as a way to reduce drowning to virtually zero worldwide. The method is highly applicable to children.

Conference's Message

The conference will answer questions swimming instructors have asked for a century: Why isn't this student learning? Is it me, or is it him? What shall I teach someone who is a sinker? How can I prevent my students from panicking? What are the nuts and bolts of staying in control? Why do these students swim stiffly? Why does a method that works for confident swim students not work for afraid ones? What makes a person safe? Is it "swimming" if someone can do strokes in shallow water but not in deep water? What would make everyone in the world water-safe?

Though confident swim students learn skills easily, they don't learn to prevent panic and remain in control, which are separate skills from swimming mechanics. MSI states that even confident swimming students need the tools of control and panic-prevention in frightening situations.

About Miracle Swimming Institute

Since 1983, Miracle Swimming Institute (MSI), founded in Berkeley, California and now headquartered in Sarasota, Florida, has taught only adults, and only adults who are afraid in water. Its urgent need to meet the needs of this population — 64% of the American adult public according to a 1998 Gallup Poll — led it to develop a simple yet powerful new method to teach, based on universal laws of learning that had not been identified previously. MSI now offers classes for afraid adults and trainings for swimming instructors, available worldwide. A class for children is under development.
