The World's Most Durable Two-Way Radio System Proves Itself Tornado-Tough, Survives Wichita Disaster

Local contractor finds working radios in the rubble, eradicating all doubt as to the strength of RCA's BR950s

HARBOR CITY, Calif., May 1, 2012 — The morning after a devastating tornado struck Wichita, Kan., on April 14, a local contractor went out to his job site to assess and start cleaning up the damage. Among other things, his office trailer was completely destroyed, with pieces and parts broken and blasted up to 200 yards away. Pretty much everything was destined for the dumpster, yet in digging through the rubble, the contractor located all six of his company's two-way radios and the battery charger. Some of this equipment was buried in mud, soaked in water, and slightly banged up, but all of the radios and the charger worked perfectly, much to the contractor's surprise.

"I was astonished," he said. "The rain, wind and damage were just incredible, yet the only thing that happened to these radios is that one of them was missing the volume button, and some of the others sustained dents. I was about to toss them in the garbage but then tested them out of curiosity and discovered they worked just fine. It was amazing."

The construction company's radios are RCA BR950s, bought from Discount Two-Way Radio, the North American RCA Distributor of commercial two-way radios and a leading radio system provider to businesses, nonprofits and governments. Known for being "the world's most durable two-way radios," their toughness is shown in a video (www.discounttwo-wayradio.com/BR950) that demonstrates how well they work after being run over by a big truck and dropped from a tall building. Solid radios to the core, these mobile devices are known for their durability, audio quality and warranty, plus they are FCC 2013 Narrowband Compliant.

Ironically, the contractor's company had used a much more expensive radio system in the past. He recently lobbied his superiors to invest in the BR950s because they were more affordable — $389 per radio versus $1,000+ each. Moreover, a BR950 can survive the abuse of a construction site, he said. The more expensive radios cannot survive that abuse, much less a tornado.

"Everyone kind of laughed at me, saying these things would be a bunch of junk because they were so much less expensive, but it turned out that they're the toughest radios around," he said. "It's been a good lesson, and we're glad to have them working. This is one less thing we have to replace or repair in the aftermath of the tornado. And that matters — you become really thankful for everything you've still got."
