In May of 2009, things were heading ever upwards for Herman and his wife and co-producer, Roseann. Their "Elephant Song" video had been featured on YouTube, his videos were averaging over a million views a month, and he was becoming a star of the emerging "kindie" music movement.  But then, things took a sharp turn downward.  A miscarriage claimed the life of their third child and led to an auto-immune disease that severely disabled Roseann for much of the next four years.  Herman continued performing to support their family, but with money and energy focused on Roseann's medical situation, they were not able to complete or release any new videos.

Roseann died in June of 2013, at the age of 36.  In the ensuing months, Eric has been working to complete two new albums and several videos which he and Roseann had conceived of but weren't able to produce.  Herman will be releasing these videos throughout 2014, and the first, "How Big," dropped on YouTube yesterday, the 14-year anniversary of when Eric and Roseann first met.

"How Big" is about the relative size of all things, from the microscopic Itty Bitty Bug to the universe itself. The narrative is creatively rendered by animator Mario Marinkovic and is akin to a children's version of the popular "Power of 10" videos.  Herman, referred to as a combination of Shel Silverstein and The Beatles, likens the song to his favorite Dr. Seuss story, Horton Hears a Who. "Thinking about how big life is can be very entertaining, but also humbling and even terrifying," says Herman. "But life is also incredibly small, and I think that puts things into perspective…  Your life is as big as it seems to you, and that's what really matters."

As the song fades, with countless galaxies flying by and a chorus (including Roseann and their two daughters) singing "How big is my world? How big is my life? How big is it all?" Herman has painted an existential picture that can be appreciated not only by adults, but by many 3 year-olds, which is quite an achievement. The video closes with a touching dedication to Roseann that tweaks the catch phrase ofGuess How Much I Love You.
